Although we consider the tulip to be quintessentially Dutch today, the origins of this special flower lie far away. The tulip originally comes from the rugged mountain regions of Central Asia and was cherished for centuries in the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey). The sultans were so fond of the flower that the tulip grew into a symbol of wealth and power; the name is even derived from the Persian word for turban.
It wasn't until the 16th century that the tulip found its way to Dutch soil. What followed was the legendary 'Tulip Mania', during which bulbs were sometimes worth as much as an Amsterdam canal house.
